Plugging is one of the simplest and most economical ways to establish a new lawn, convert a troubled lawn, or repair a damaged lawn. Grass plugs have a complete root system and are easier to establish than sod. Moisture is probably the most important consideration immediately after planting. Adjust watering to climatic conditions. Without rainfall, grass plugs should be watered daily for the first 7 to 10 days. Soil and plug moisture must be maintained. Consult with your gardening expert about the desired amount of water. Root-in will occur in approximately 14-20 days during cool months and 7-14 days during warm months.

Don’t be afraid to mow a new lawn. After the turf begins to grow, mow at recommended heights. By mowing early and not letting excessive grass accumulate, the texture will be finer, many upright weeds will be killed, the turf will become more dense, and lateral spread will increase.

There has got to be a better product
By RalphVerified Purchaser from Knoxville TN on 7/18/2007
Pros:
The ejector--good idea
Cons:
Difficult to Use, Doesnot work in clay soil
Best Uses:
Hard to use

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

The square plug is too large. The edges came bent and had to be straightened and sharpened. My weight is not enough to sink the plugger in my turf.

sod plugger
By JanVerified Purchaser from Tampa. FL on 7/18/2007
Pros:
Solid Construction
Cons:
Hard to get plugs out, Hole larger than plugs, Starting to rust at joint
Best Uses:
Gardening
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener

Even though solid contruction, joints are already showing rust. Very difficult to push out soil with small pusher. Holes are a good deal larger than the sod plugs you can purchase so quite a bit of backfill needed.

This thing works great for me. Instructions say wet the sod and planting area. This it a must for good results. Dry soil won't stay in the plugger.

Well made tool, but one caveat...
By AlVerified Purchaser from Alabama Gulf Coast on 6/1/2007
Pros:
Comfortable Grip, Solid Construction, Weather Resistant
Cons:
Limited sod cutting
Best Uses:
Lawn Maintenance
Describe Yourself:
Avid Gardener
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The one caveat is that I could not cut plugs from my existing grasses to use for transplant. On well established St. Augustine and Centipede over hard, sandy soil, the tool just could not break through the tough grass and roots to make the plug. Makes a great "new" spot to plug, however and if you can cut the sod plug another way, or if you are using commercial sod, the tool will do a bang-up job for you. It still makes the job easier and I'm happy with it even though slightly limited for my conditions.

works but hurts
By plugman from austin, tx on 5/27/2007
Pros:
Comfortable Grip, No bending over, Solid Construction
Cons:
Difficult to Use, Plug ejector hard to use
Best Uses:
Lawn Maintenance
Describe Yourself:
Getting Started
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The construction is solid and it creates great plugs. The only problem that I have with this product is that it has a metal loop that you need to press down on to eject a plug from the tool. After extracting a plug, it is EXTREMELY difficult to press down hard enough with your fingers to get the plug out. It took me on average 1-2 minutes to get the plug ejected, and my hands are killing me after doing only about 8 plugs.

Other than that it does get the job done, just make sure to call up he-man before you get started.
